Local veterans to be honoured!
Local Canadian Armed Forces veterans are to be officially honoured at a joint ceremony of the Georgina Military Museum and the Town of Georgina this May 28th at the Museum's 3rd Annual Military Day on Woodbine Avenue.
Returning Afghanistan Service personnel, as well as those who have served since 2001 in other spheres of conflict (Iraq, Libya etc.) are invited to attend and receive personally inscribed certificates 'Thanking them for their service to the country' and 'Welcoming them safely home'.
"The Military Museum has been working with the Department of National Defense in Toronto as well as local officials to advise service personnel of the event," said museum curator Phil Craig, "but we are also attempting to reach out to veterans who are no longer in active service, in the hope that all who qualify are aware of the invitation to our special day."
The museum is hoping that local citizens who might know of current or retired soldiers who call Georgina home will contact the museum so that it can reach out to those veterans. "It's very important that all who should be included are notified and that no one is left out," said Craig. They can reach us through our website at www.georginamilitarymuseum.ca."
Military Day, now in its 3rd year, is an annual event where visitors can come up close with WWII army trucks, re-enactors, precision drill demonstrations by local cadet corps, and more. There is a special return visit by The Queens York Rangers Regiment of Toronto featuring actively serving soldiers and their reconnaissance vehicle. Kids will once again be given the Rucksack Challenge to see if they can stand up with 90 lbs on their back, "A big hit last year," noted Craig. There will be face painting for the kids, a BBQ, and more.
This year also features a very special partner, Georgina Salutes II! Five local bands will perform including Laura Lee Montgomery and the Tequila Mockingbirds, Pat Mete, the US Band, the Wannamaker Band, and Jimmy Kincaid and the Smoking Guns. The bands will play throughout the day.
"Military Day is very much about visitors taking a free tour of our museum, particularly the kids, so they can learn about the true cost of war," said Craig. "While honouring the commitment and sacrifice of our armed forces past and present, we strive to teach our youth ways to avoid conflict."
Visitors will also be treated to a visit by the Limber Gunners with their 25-pounder WW2 artillery piece which will be live-fired.
"This year is special," said Phil Craig. "We gather as a community to show our local service men and women that they are loved and that we welcome them home safe. We ask that the community turn out in large numbers to personally thank our young men and women in uniform for their service to our country."
Veterans who feel that a public ceremony may not be right for them are invited by the museum to send family or friends in their place. "Or," said Craig, "We will arrange for a private presentation in the near future. The goal is to ensure that all the veterans know that we care."
The community is encouraged to come out on the May 28 ... 10 – 4 ... admission is FREE ... bring the kids and grandparents ... be part of saying "We are proud of you" and "Thank You".
